The University of Nicosia is an independent, co-educational, equal opportunity tertiary education institution, combining the best elements in western education, quality standards and an international philosophy. Located in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, at the cross-roads of three continents, the University is quickly becoming a global education centre. International in philosophy; the University hosts students from all over the world, in a multicultural learning environment, promoting friendship, cooperation and understanding.Beginning as a small educational institution 28 years ago (established in 1980 as Intercollege), today the University hosts over4,000 local and international students, employing over 300 academic, research and administrative staff.

The University pursues excellence in education through high teaching standards, in a continually improving academic environment. Besides classroom instruction, the University offers students opportunities to become involved in a whole range of activities including student clubs, sports, public lectures and seminars. The University of Nicosia received approval for an Erasmus University Charter and is an official participant in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The University of Nicosia is actively involved in the community with campaigns for various causes, including environmental protection. In recognition of this work the institution received the prestigious “Global 500” award from the United Nations.

The University is actively involved in European and local research projects as a partner and as a coordinating institution, adopting a dynamic and proactive strategy on research. The University constantly wishes to reach out to all its stakeholders in order to work with them to develop ideas for academic and applied research to better the Cyprus community, country and region.

The University has conducted several research studies which focus primarily on the youth of Cyprus and thus has ample experience related to research on youth. In the past few years, the institution has conducted projects under the Research Promotion Foundation which specifically centre on the attitudes of students, teenagers and young adults. These studies include: “The State of the Cypriot Family in Contemporary Cyprus” (2004), “The Identification of Teachers’ and Students’ Attitudes toward Multiculturalism in the Secondary Public School System and the Development of Cultural Awareness” (2003) and “The Habit of Smoking amongst Teenagers and Young Adults in Cyprus” (2004-2005).

The Cyprus Youth Organisation has conducted four recurring research studies concerning young people in Cyprus. The study, which takes place every 5-6 years, began in 1985. The first study was conducted by the Cyprus Youth Organisation itself. All three studies that followed were undertaken by the University (then Intercollege) (in 1996, 2002, and 2007) on behalf of the Cyprus Youth Organisation. This longitudinal approach allows for long-term comparisons as the issues studied each time do not vary very much. The issues under examination included: Leisure Time, Employment, Relationships, Perceptions and Problems of the Cypriot Youth, etc.

The University of Nicosia is not new to UNDP-ACT. Over the last few years, the University has worked as a partner on various projects, and as a trainer in many seminars, funded or supported by UNDP.

The Cyprus Social and Economic Research Centre (KADEM) was established in 1998. The Centre is made up of 5 full-time employees and 77 part-time staff. Most of its personnel have been working together since 1989 in various research areas including public opinion research, research on voter inclinations and behaviour, customer behaviour and profile and media research; offering statistical information relating to the Turkish Cypriot community. KADEM has conducted many studies for organisations and provides support for companies with research departments, universities and NGOs, for fieldwork, data management and related consultancy services.

KADEM has conducted 3 studies on Cypriot youth. One of these studies was conducted for the British Council while the other 2 were conducted for the Department of Youth (in 1999 and 2003) in Northern Cyprus. The British Council study investigated young people’s attitudes towards educational issues (e.g. attitudes towards education, problems related to schools). The study was made up of a 200 sample-size survey, focus groups and diary records. The studies for the Department of Youth employed a standard questionnaire in order to examine young people’s behaviour and attitude towards friendship, drug use, political participation and club memberships, among other issues.

KADEM has achieved an important accumulation of knowledge through projects, regional studies and research regarding various sectors. KADEM has prior experience in research related to social stratification, income and consumption patterns, political orientation and voter preferences. KADEM conducted 28 quantitative and 19 qualitative studies in 2006. In addition to complying with the standards set forth by ESOMAR/ICC (European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research), KADEM strictly follows the principles of a quality-conscious approach in all research phases. Adhering to the principles of quality and reliability and setting ‘value creation’ as the main target for their clients, helps reinforce the position of KADEM in the Cyprus Research Market.
